Technology in health care has made it possible for patients to use devices to access their medical information, monitor vital signs, take tests at home, and carry out a plethora of other tasks that could only previously be conducted inside the doctor’s office (Topol, 2013). This enhanced technology is one of the many reasons that there has been a shift from inpatient to outpatient care. Although patients have benefited greatly from health care technology, there are also downsides to technology, such as how it has affected the cost of care. For this Discussion Board assignment, you should complete the following:

  • Provide a definition of outpatient care.
  • Discuss 2–3 ways in which technological innovations have impacted, or will impact, the delivery of care in the United States.
  • Discuss 2–3 ways in which technology has had, or is expected to have, a detrimental impact on the delivery of care.

The use of at least 2 scholarly references is required.

Introduction:

The advancement of technology has greatly impacted healthcare delivery in the United States. Patients are now able to access their medical information, monitor their vital signs, and even conduct medical tests at home. However, with these benefits come downsides as well, including the impact on the cost of care. In this discussion, we will explore the impact of technological innovation on the delivery of care in the United States.

1. Definition of outpatient care:

Outpatient care refers to medical treatment that does not require an overnight stay in a hospital or other medical facility. This type of care includes diagnostic tests, preventive care, and treatment for minor injuries or illnesses.

2. 2-3 ways in which technological innovations have impacted, or will impact, the delivery of care in the United States:

a) Telemedicine: Technological advances have made it possible for patients to consult with healthcare providers remotely. Telemedicine has the potential to improve access to care for those who live in remote areas, have mobility issues, or have difficulty traveling to healthcare facilities.

b) Electronic Health Record (EHR) Systems: EHR systems have streamlined the process of managing patient information. This technology has improved communication and coordination between healthcare providers, reducing the likelihood of medical errors, and ultimately improving patient outcomes.

c) Wearable Technology: Wearable technology, such as fitness trackers and smartwatches, have the ability to collect and transmit data on a patient’s health status. This information can be used to monitor chronic conditions, track progress, and provide early intervention if needed.

3. 2-3 ways in which technology has had, or is expected to have, a detrimental impact on the delivery of care:

a) Cost: The cost of technology is one of the biggest downsides to its impact on healthcare delivery. While telemedicine can improve access to care, it is not always covered by insurance, and patients may need to pay out of pocket for virtual visits.

b) Accessibility: While technology has improved access to care in some instances, it has also widened the “digital divide” for those who do not have access to internet or technology. This can prevent certain populations from accessing virtual care or medical information.

c) Privacy and Security: With any technology, there are concerns about privacy and security. EHR systems and other medical technology require sensitive information, and there is always the potential for cyberattacks and data breaches. These concerns can make patients hesitant to use technology for medical purposes.

Conclusion:

Technology has greatly impacted healthcare delivery in the United States, with benefits such as improved access and communication between healthcare providers. However, there are downsides as well, including the impact on the cost of care and concerns around privacy and security. It is important for healthcare providers and policymakers to continue to evaluate and address these impacts as technology continues to shape the future of healthcare delivery.
