Healthy People 2020’s commitment to promote health and prevent disease encourages individuals to make healthy lifestyle choices for themselves and their families. Conceptual models and theories play a major role in health promotion and disease prevention. In addition, epidemiological data, such as morbidity and mortality statistics, helps identify health problems common to a particular population.
Select one of the Healthy People 2020 initiatives and discuss available preventative health services (immunizations, health screenings, etc.) relevant to the initiative, as well as health promotion strategies to be implemented by the advanced practice nurse for a selected population/age/ethnic group (neonates, children, adults, pregnant female, older adult). Please consider theoretical concepts and epidemiological data while discussing health promotion strategies.

Hispanics are one of the largest ethnic groups in the United States, and their cultural beliefs and practices may differ from the dominant American culture. Hispanics have a strong family focus, and they value the importance of extended family members. They may have certain food preferences, such as eating rice and beans, tortillas, and spicy foods. Religion plays a significant role in their lives, so it is essential to consider this aspect when providing healthcare services to Hispanic patients.
3. Application of CLAS Standard:
The Communication with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) Patients Standard, which requires healthcare providers to offer quality language assistance services to patients with limited English proficiency, is one of the CLAS standards that supports the identified need of Hispanics. As an advanced practice nurse, I can promote culturally sensitive care by providing interpretation services to bridge the communication gap between the healthcare provider and the patient. I can also educate myself on the Hispanic culture, beliefs, and values to provide more effective care and establish relationships with the Hispanic community.

Topic 2: Healthy People 2020
The Healthy People 2020 initiative focuses on promoting health and preventing disease. The initiative’s goals are to reduce illness, disability, and death resulting from the major health challenges faced by Americans. One of the main health challenges is mental health. Therefore, the Mental Health initiative is chosen to discuss available preventative health services and health promotion strategies.
There are several available preventive health services for mental health that an advanced practice nurse can provide. One of these services is screening for mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The advanced practice nurse can provide population-based care by screening the target population and providing appropriate referrals for treatment and care. Immunizations, such as flu vaccines, can also be used to prevent physical illness that may exacerbate mental health symptoms.
The health promotion strategies that can be implemented by the advanced practice nurse for a selected population/age/ethnic group (young adults, for example) would be focused on improving their coping mechanisms, building resilience, and reducing their risk factors for mental health disorders. The advanced practice nurse can apply theoretical concepts such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, which focuses on teaching individuals to change their negative thoughts and emotions that can lead to mental health disorders. A holistic approach that emphasizes creating a supportive environment, improving social support, and building coping skills can also be employed. Epidemiological data can be used to identify the common health problems and factors that influence mental health outcomes in specific age groups, such as young adults.
