Population Choice and Analysis:
For this assignment, I chose to focus on the Hispanic population in the United States. Hispanics are the largest minority population and, unfortunately, face numerous health disparities due to socio-economic factors, acculturation, and limited access to healthcare. According to the US Census Bureau, the Hispanic population is projected to reach 111 million by 2060. The majority of the Hispanic population resides in California, Texas, Florida, and New York. The median age for Hispanics is 29 years old, and 25% of the Hispanic population has limited English proficiency. Moreover, the median household income for Hispanics is $56,113, which is lower than non-Hispanic whites. Additionally, many Hispanic communities are exposed to environmental hazards such as air pollution, which can have adverse effects on their health. Finally, access to healthcare is limited for many Hispanic people, particularly for those who are undocumented.
Mortality and Morbidity Risk Factors:
The Hispanic population faces several morbidity and mortality risk factors, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, and depression. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among Hispanics, accounting for 25% of all deaths. The prevalence of obesity in Hispanic adults is 47%, higher than any other racial or ethnic group. Diabetes prevalence in Hispanics is 12.5%, which is higher than whites or blacks. Lastly, depression is a significant mental health concern for the Hispanic population, with Hispanics having the highest prevalence compared to any other racial or ethnic group.
Health Promotion Activities:
To address the mortality and morbidity risk factors discussed earlier, the following health promotion activities can be implemented for the Hispanic population.
1. Cardiovascular Disease: Encourage the consumption of a heart-healthy diet by using culturally sensitive educational materials in Spanish. Additionally, promote regular physical activity through fun and culturally relevant activities such as traditional dance or Zumba sessions.
2. Obesity: Increase access to healthy and affordable food options in Hispanic communities through farmer’s markets and community gardens. Additionally, encourage public transportation, walking, or biking to create safe and enjoyable opportunities for physical activity.
3. Diabetes: Implement a diabetes prevention campaign that includes education on screening, nutrition, and physical activity. Utilize promotoras, individuals who are members of the Hispanic community, to increase outreach and build trust within the community.
4. Depression: Provide culturally and linguistically appropriate education on mental health and destigmatize mental health issues. Additionally, increase access to mental health services for individuals who present with depression symptoms.

The Hispanic population in the United States is a vulnerable population that faces numerous health disparities due to socio-economic, acculturation, and limited access to healthcare. The morbidity and mortality risk factors for this group are significant and require effective health promotion activities that address these risk factors. The four proposed health promotion activities have the potential to improve health outcomes for the Hispanic population in the United States.
