Worldview Perspective Transformation ( p 28-29)

Unit 4 – Discussion B

Read Kohlborg’s Delemma (p. 30) To gauge the children’s view on the dilemma presented, Kohlberg  followed up with questions similar to

  1. Should the husband have done that?
  2. Would you have done it to save someone you love?
  3. Was it right or wrong?
  4. Or, possibly, morally right and legally wrong?
  5. If caught, tried, and found guilty, should Heinze be sent to jail?

How would you answer?  Be sure to provide your reasoning behind each answer.

(Kohlberg emphasized that in determining the stage a person is at it is more important to explore the reasoning than the simple answer that the person gives to the questions.)

Discuss a relational situation in your own life (or the life of someone you know) that illustrates the interplay of the attachment components of proximity, safe haven, and secure bond–as well as how trust plays into this. (This may, in fact, dovetail with what you describe in the Resilience Exercise, so you should feel free to identify a different situation or experience. Either way, be sure to relate it to the specifics of attachment theory).

Unit 5 – Discussion B

After completing the Inventory (based on Jane Loevinger’s work) on pages R48-R50, indicate the stage you are at according to her model, and briefly indicate one or two of the reasons why. More important, list the three most personally significant qualities that you would like to acquire (e.g., “I have renounced that which is unattainable for me”).

NOTE: I would rather you place emphasis on understanding as opposed to lengthy responding. When you are responding to one another, however, you shouldn’t shortchange each other; use as many words as necessary to fully communicate your thoughts.

Introduction: In this assignment, we will be addressing various topics related to psychology and moral development. We will discuss our personal experiences and perspectives on psycho-cultural assumptions, moral dilemmas, moral and ego development, close relationships in adulthood, and self-assessment based on Jane Loevinger’s work.

Unit 4 – Discussion A:
The psycho-cultural assumption that I have changed over time is related to my perception of mental health. Earlier, I used to think that people with mental illnesses are weak and can’t cope with life’s challenges. However, after studying and researching mental illnesses, I have learned that it is not a matter of weakness but a medical condition that requires treatment and support. Factors that contributed to this change include academic learning, personal experiences of people I know, and exposure to literature and media that portrays mental illnesses accurately.

Unit 4 – Discussion B:
In response to Kohlberg’s dilemma, I would answer the questions as follows:
1. Should the husband have done that? – No, the husband should not have taken the drug, even if it meant saving his wife’s life, as it is illegal and immoral.
2. Would you have done it to save someone you love? – No, I would not have taken the drug, even if it meant saving someone’s life, as it goes against my moral principles and values.
3. Was it right or wrong? – It was wrong as it was against the law, and the husband’s actions were not ethical.
4. Or, possibly, morally right and legally wrong? – No, in this case, the actions were neither morally right nor legally right.
5. If caught, tried, and found guilty, should Heinze be sent to jail? – Yes, he should be sent to jail as he broke the law and engaged in unethical behavior.

Unit 5 – Discussion A:
After watching the American Sniper video, I believe that the moral principles going through his mind when deciding to shoot the child were related to his duty to protect the lives of his fellow soldiers and himself. He was in a war situation where his life and the lives of his fellow soldiers were at risk, and he believed that shooting the child was necessary to prevent an attack. He also seemed to struggle with the emotional and ethical consequences of his actions, which suggests that he was thinking about the impact of his decisions on himself and others.

Unit 6:
One relational situation that illustrates the interplay of attachment components of proximity, safe haven, and secure bond is my relationship with my partner. We have been together for several years, and over time we have developed a secure attachment that allows us to feel safe and supported in each other’s presence. We have also built trust by being there for each other during difficult times and by communicating honestly and openly. Being in close proximity and having a safe haven to turn to has helped us develop a strong and secure bond that is based on mutual respect and affection.

Unit 5 – Discussion B:
Based on Jane Loevinger’s work, I believe that I am at stage 4 – the conscientious stage. This means that I am motivated by the need to be responsible and to do what is right according to my values and principles. One of the reasons for this stage is my upbringing, where I was taught to be responsible and accountable for my actions. Another reason is my education and work experience, which have reinforced the importance of being conscientious and dependable. The three most personally significant qualities that I would like to acquire are empathy, resilience, and self-awareness. I believe that these qualities will help me become a better person and a more effective professional.
