Student 1 asnwer:

Patient was experiencing Hematochezia for several months which showed Diverticulitis. The cause of her symptoms was due to the polyps in the colon that had reached about 20cm long because of an Adenocarcinoma . This was diagnosed through a colonoscopy where the entire colon is examined using a endoscope from the anus region up to the colon, and then they take a sample of the colon to be sent for a biopsy to see if any cancerous tissues are found. The procedure to remove these polyps was a sigmoid colectomy after it is controlled with antibiotics and bowel prep. This can be done by either opening up the stomach from the naval region or done laparoscopically.  (Source was from: mkuh.nhs.uk)

Student 2 answer:

The patient was showing chronic symptoms, such as hematochezia, for about 8 months. The cause of this symptom is a vast sessile polyp. Infiltrating adenocarcinoma in the colon tells us that the patient has colon cancer. The procedure that diagnosed the patient’s condition is known as a colonoscopy, this is a test used to find changes or irregularity in both the colon and rectum. The patient is now scheduled for a sigmoid colectomy, also known as a sigmoidectomy, at the hospital. This procedure is an operation where the infected part of the patient’s colon will be removed, and then joined with the rectum.

Introduction:

Both student answers touch on the diagnosis and procedure for a patient showing symptoms of hematochezia. However, each answer presents slightly different information and perspectives. In this response, I will address each student’s answer individually and provide my own analysis.

Student 1:

Student 1 describes a patient with hematochezia caused by polyps in the colon that had developed into adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis of this condition was made through a colonoscopy, followed by a sigmoid colectomy to remove the infected part of the colon. While the response is well-structured and accurately describes the condition and the procedure, it lacks in-depth medical terminology and reference sources.

Student 2:

Student 2 also describes a patient with chronic hematochezia caused by a colon polyp, specifically a sessile polyp that developed into infiltrating adenocarcinoma. The diagnostic method was a colonoscopy, followed by a sigmoid colectomy to remove the infected part of the colon. The response shows a more in-depth understanding of the medical terms and provides better use of reference sources.

My Analysis:

Both student responses are well-structured and accurately describe the condition and the procedure. Student 2, however, provides better use of medical terminology and reference sources. Patient 1’s symptoms were more accurately described by Student 2, as the polyps were sessile, and the diagnosis relied on colonoscopy findings. Student 2’s description of infiltrating adenocarcinoma is more accurate than Student 1’s description of adenocarcinoma. In summary, both students provide relevant information, but Student 2’s effort is of a higher quality.
