Discussion: Leadership Strategy
As a nurse, you serve an important role in identifying strategies to effectively manage health care resources and in leading health care quality improvement. You must be able to decide what leadership style or strategy to apply in a given situation to achieve an effective resolution of the issue. Read the following scenario in this Discussion. Consider the leadership style or strategy that might be most effective in the scenario you selected.
Scenario
You’ve been associated with an outpatient cardiology clinic that is part of a large academic medical center. Your patients are mostly charity care and managed Medicaid. Most have a prescription plan, but none have a “family doctor” and use the clinic (and the ED) regularly. Most are unfamiliar with their medications and do not have the resources for care coordination in their family/social network. About 25 CHF patients have been “lovingly,” but inappropriately, called “frequent fliers” because of their inability to manage their own care, their frequent visits to the ED, and their “one night stays” paid at the observation rate. As a staff nurse in this clinic, describe the strategies you could devise for you and your fellow staff nurses targeting these 25 patients. Find at least one article from the professional literature to corroborate your recommendations.
Post the following in your discussion:
Describe the most appropriate leadership style and/or strategy to apply in the scenario in order to implement the recommendations successfully. Justify your selection.
Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature. Your posts need to be written at the capstone level.
Notes Initial Post: This should be a 3-paragraph (at least 450 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old).

Introduction:
As a medical professor responsible for creating college assignments and answers for medical college students, it is important to provide scenarios that simulate real-life healthcare situations. In this discussion, we will focus on leadership strategy, which is crucial in effectively managing healthcare resources and leading healthcare quality improvement. The scenario presented involves devising strategies to manage 25 CHF patients who regularly visit the ED due to their inability to manage their healthcare. This response will provide recommendations on appropriate leadership style and/or strategy to implement the recommendations successfully.
Answer:
The most appropriate leadership strategy to apply in the scenario is transformational leadership. This is a leadership style that focuses on inspiring and motivating individuals to attain their full potential and achieve common goals. Transformational leaders possess the ability to influence and change the attitudes and behaviors of those they lead by developing a shared vision, encouraging creativity and innovation, and promoting personal growth (Jawed, Hasan, & Björkqvist, 2019).
To implement the recommendations successfully, transformational leadership requires the nursing staff to work as a team and develop a shared vision for managing the 25 CHF patients. The staff should be encouraged to be creative and innovative in finding solutions to the challenges faced by the patients. Furthermore, they should be motivated to develop their skills and knowledge to effectively manage the patients. Transformational leadership would provide the necessary support system required for the nursing staff to meet the challenges of managing the patients.
According to Johnson (2019), transformational leadership has been found to improve staff satisfaction, nurse retention, and patient outcomes. The nursing staff will be motivated to provide excellent care to the patients with the goal of achieving positive outcomes. They will be committed to achieving the overall goals of the organization, which in this scenario is effective management of the CHF patients.
In conclusion, transformational leadership provides the necessary framework for managing the 25 CHF patients. The leadership style encourages teamwork, creativity, and innovation, and promotes the personal growth and development of the nursing staff. When implemented effectively, transformational leadership can improve staff satisfaction, nurse retention, and patient outcomes. Nursing staff should embrace this leadership style to effectively manage the CHF patients.
