Final Project
The complexity and volume of patient data makes clinical decision support very challenging for health care providers. The field of Informatics can be used to process this data and form recommendations to assist these health care providers. Clinical decision support systems are used to help determine the nature of patients’ disease state, determine a diagnosis, and develop a care plan. For your final project, select and evaluate one of the clinical decision support systems (CDSS) listed on pages 127 (qualitative- CDSS types) and/or 135 (CDSS specific platforms) of your textbook.
Your paper must address the following components:
- Design
- Privacy and Security
- Interoperability
- What other health information systems (EHR, CPOE, etc.) does the CDSS incorporate?
- What standards (ANSI, HL-7, UMLS, ASTM, etc.) does the CDSS utilize?
- What strategies could be used to ensure interoperability with other systems?
- Incorporation of Internet Technologies
- How does the CDSS interact with the internet?
- What internet based standards does the CDSS incorporate (SGML, XML, HTTP, TCP/IP, etc.)?
- Data Integrity
- What are the sources of the data?
- List at least 10 data elements and permissible values for the data dictionary?
- For your selected system, create a policy to ensure compliance with health information, data exchange or industry infrastructure standards.
The Final Paper should demonstrate an understanding of the reading assignments, class discussions, case studies, assignments, additional research and the application of new knowledge. You must utilize at least five scholarly sources, in addition to the course text. Your references must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Writing Center.

Introduction:
The healthcare industry generates a vast amount of data, which is complex and difficult for healthcare providers to manage effectively. However, advancements in technology, specifically clinical decision support systems (CDSS), have made it possible to process this data efficiently and generate recommendations for healthcare providers. This final project aims to select and evaluate a CDSS from the options listed in the textbook (pages 127 and 135) and examine its design, privacy, security, interoperability, incorporation of internet technologies, data integrity, and compliance with health information and industry infrastructure standards.
Question 1:
What is the purpose of this final project?
The purpose of this final project is to select and evaluate a clinical decision support system (CDSS) that assists healthcare providers in making decisions about patients’ health. Specific elements of the evaluation will include design, privacy and security, interoperability, incorporation of internet technologies, data integrity, and compliance with health information and industry infrastructure standards.
Question 2:
What are the components that the final paper should address?
The final paper should address the following components:
1. Design of the CDSS
2. Privacy and security of the CDSS
3. Interoperability of the CDSS
4. Incorporation of internet technologies in the CDSS
5. Data integrity of the CDSS
6. A policy to ensure compliance with health information, data exchange, or industry infrastructure standards for the selected system.
Question 3:
What resources must be utilized for the final paper?
For the final paper, five scholarly sources, in addition to the class textbook, must be utilized. The references must be formatted according to the APA style as outlined in the Writing Center. The paper must also be eight to ten double-spaced pages long and follow APA formatting guidelines. The paper must have a title page, introductory paragraph with a thesis statement, critical analysis of the topic, and a conclusion that restates the thesis.
