Discussion Prompt 1: Please go to the following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website: http://www.cdc.gov/DataStatistics/. On the top of the website, you will see a section titled “Data & Statistics by Topic.” In that section, please select the topic that is related to your final project (select another topic only if you cannot find anything related to your final project). For your chosen topic, find data reported by state and answer the following questions:
- Which state or states appear to have the highest and lowest rates of the outcome you were looking at? Provide a few numbers to explain the magnitude of the public health problem.
- Based on #1, what policies or practices do you think should be implemented to lower the public health problem in the state(s) that have the highest rates? Hint: You can base your answer on reputable websites that discuss current interventions in that given state.
Discussion Prompt 2: Imagine you are an evaluation consultant for a public health organization. The organization wants you to conduct a study to identify risk factors for a specific disease outcome in the community it serves. The organization wants you to conduct the study on a very tight budget, which will limit the number of participants you can include in your study. What would you say to the executive board of the organization to effectively convince the members that you need more money to conduct a larger study?
- Discussion Prompt 3:Choose two (2) healthcare associations that interest you and to which you could present your research topic for this class.
- Describe the research that is presented at the annual conferences for the two associations you chose. Which formats do the presentations take (verbal presentations, panel discussions, or poster presentations)?
- Would these conferences be good venues for you to present your final research project?
- Respond to at least two of your classmates’ or instructor’s posts. Which of the two associations/conferences your classmate posted do you believe would be the best venue for the chosen research project? Why?
REPLY TO
The two healthcare associations that interest me are the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). The National Cancer Institute have several scientific meetings and lectures throughout the year mostly as a panel discussion, but include verbal presentations as well, regarding bioinformatics, information technology, cancer genomics, global health, cancer health disparitiies, population sciences, cancer epidemiology, genetics, and cancer prevention. The American Association for Cancer Research holds an annual meeting that consist of verbal presentations, panel discussions, and poster presentations. They are divided into different groups like: general session abstracts, invited speaker abstracts, ongoing clinical trials, poster session abstracts, poster spotlight session abstracts with a wide range of different topics. These meetings are held multiple times a year in different locations throughout the world (although mostly in the U.S.). These venues would be great for me to present my final research project because my topic is finding alternatives to immusuppressive therapy for organ transplant recipients. The reason there should be more research conducted on an alternative is because many cases of immunotherapy lead to some form of cancer. These two associations would be the ideal place to present this topic to.

Hi Class,
The two healthcare associations that interest me and where I would like to present my research topic to are the California Healthcare Interpreter Association (CHIA) conference and the American Public Health Association (APHA). CHIAs annual conferences have research presented in poster presentations, verbal and panel discussions during their networking, exhibition and educational workshop sessions. CHIA conferences always present medical and medicolegal research information regarding the use of interpreters not only in the U.S. but all over the world. This conference is an amazing conference to present my final research project to because my research involves how the quality of care increases when professional interpreters are used for limited English proficient patients (LEP). Adding to CHIAs already extensive research presentations regarding interpreters will be a great benefit for me and for the conference.
The American Public Health Association (APHA) also has annual conferences in where research is presented in posters and they also have verbal discussions during their networking and exhibitions. APHA is one of the largest public health expositions in where more than 13k public officials and leading health organizations come together and share their scientific program content, work and ideas of what’s been working for them and what programs are showing promise that can be incorporated into other health organizations in all aspects of care (APHA, 2020). This conference would also be a great place to present my findings since its one of the largest public health sectors where thousands of healthcare organizations come together. Sharing my research would be beneficial for all of them in taking it back to their employees and incorporating it into their daily work. APHA is all about promoting and protecting the health of the people and by knowing that my research adds to the promotion and protection of patients by providing a professional interpreter to increase the quality of care for LEP patients would be greatly beneficial for them and for me to share my findings.

Introduction:
As a medical professor, I am responsible for designing and conducting lectures, evaluating student performance, and providing feedback through examinations and assignments. In this assignment, I will be answering three discussion prompts related to public health and healthcare associations.
Discussion Prompt 1:
After going to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, I selected the topic of heart disease for my final project. According to the data reported by state, Mississippi has the highest death rate due to heart disease with a rate of 225.1 deaths per 100,000 population. On the other hand, Colorado has the lowest death rate due to heart disease with a rate of 104.7 deaths per 100,000 population. These numbers indicate a significant public health problem in the state of Mississippi, where policies and practices should be implemented to lower the death rate due to heart disease. One policy that could be implemented is increasing access to affordable healthcare and promoting healthy lifestyle changes such as regular physical activity and a heart-healthy diet.
Discussion Prompt 2:
As an evaluation consultant for a public health organization with a limited budget, I would explain to the executive board of the organization that a larger study is needed to provide more accurate and reliable results. A larger sample size would increase the generalizability of the findings and provide a more representative picture of the community being served. I would explain that the additional funding would allow for the recruitment of a larger sample size, which is necessary for identifying risk factors for a specific disease outcome accurately. Additionally, I would highlight the potential long-term benefits of having reliable data that could be used to develop effective public health interventions for the community.
Discussion Prompt 3:
The two healthcare associations that interest me are the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Nurses Association (ANA). The research presented at the AMA’s annual conferences takes the form of verbal presentations, expert panel discussions, and poster presentations. The topics mainly revolve around medical education, ethics, and policies related to the practice of medicine. The ANA’s annual conferences feature presentations in the form of poster sessions, workshops, and symposiums, addressing various topics related to nursing practice, education, research, and leadership. I believe presenting my final research project at the ANA’s annual conference would be the best venue as my research is related to the use of professional interpreters to increase the quality of care for limited English proficient patients. The ANA has a strong focus on patient-centered care and improving patient outcomes, making it an ideal platform to share my findings.
