As a medical professor, I believe it is essential for nursing students to have a clear understanding of their personal philosophy of nursing practice. In this answer, I will discuss the following criteria: the philosophy/conceptual framework/theory/middle-range theory that describes nursing in my approach, how I utilize this philosophy to organize my thoughts for critical thinking and decision making in nursing practice, my personal definition of nursing, person, health, and environment, two beliefs/values about nursing that guide my practice, and an analysis of my communication style.
1. Which philosophy/conceptual framework/theory/middle-range theory describes nursing in the way you think about it?
In my opinion, the middle-range theory that describes nursing in the way I think about it is the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory by Dorothea Orem. This theory emphasizes the importance of self-care in promoting patient independence and improving health outcomes. As a nurse, I believe it is my responsibility to assist patients with their activities of daily living and help them develop self-care skills that will enable them to manage their health effectively.
2. Discuss how you could utilize the philosophy/conceptual framework/theory/middle-range theory to organize your thoughts for critical thinking and decision making in nursing practice.
I believe that by utilizing the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, I can more effectively organize my thoughts when working with patients. This theory emphasizes the importance of identifying the patient’s self-care deficits and developing a plan of care that promotes patient independence. In doing so, I can prioritize patient needs, develop appropriate interventions, and provide patient-centered care.
3. Formulate and discuss your personal definition of nursing, person, health, and environment.
My personal definition of nursing is a dynamic profession that promotes health, prevents illness, and provides patient-centered care. A person is an individual with unique characteristics, values, and beliefs who seeks health and well-being. Health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being that enables individuals to live a fulfilling life. Environment is the social, economic, and cultural context that influences an individual’s health and well-being.
4. Discuss a minimum of two beliefs and/or values about nursing that guide your own practice.
Two beliefs and/or values about nursing that guide my own practice are patient-centered care and evidence-based practice. Patient-centered care is essential in promoting positive health outcomes and empowering patients to manage their health effectively. Evidence-based practice emphasizes the importance of utilizing current research and best practices to guide clinical decision making and improve patient outcomes.
5. Analyze your communication style using one of the tools presented in the course.
I used the DISC Assessment tool to analyze my communication style. My style is dominant and direct, emphasizing achieving results and taking action. However, it can come across as forceful and insensitive to others’ feelings, which can negatively impact communication with patients and interdisciplinary teams.
6. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses associated with your style of communication.
The strength of my communication style is that it is efficient and goal-oriented, which enables me to prioritize tasks and achieve results quickly. However, its weakness is that it can be perceived as lacking empathy and consideration for others’ perspectives, which can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings.
7. Impact of your communication style on your ability to collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team.
My communication style can impact my ability to collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team. Because my style is direct and action-oriented, it can come across as insensitive to others’ feelings, which can impede collaboration and reduce team effectiveness. To address this, I need to develop more effective listening skills and focus on building genuine relationships with other team members to promote effective communication and collaboration.
