Introduction: As a medical professor, it is important to understand the different types of research designs in order to effectively evaluate student performance and provide feedback. In this discussion, we will explore the differences between experimental and nonexperimental research designs and the level of control applied to each.

Experimental Research Design: Experimental research involves manipulating one or more variables to observe the effect on another variable. The researcher has control over the independent variable and randomly assigns participants to groups to control for extraneous variables. An example of experimental research in medical practice would be a clinical trial testing the effectiveness of a new drug on a specific medical condition. The level of control in experimental research is high, as the researcher has control over the variables and can manipulate and measure them precisely.

Nonexperimental Research Design: Nonexperimental research does not involve manipulating variables or randomly assigning participants to groups. Observational studies, surveys, and case studies are examples of nonexperimental research. In medical research, a case study would involve examining the medical history and treatment of a single patient with a rare condition. Nonexperimental research designs have a lower level of control as the researcher has limited control over variables and cannot manipulate them.

Therefore, while experimental research provides greater control, nonexperimental research design is more practical and ethical in some cases.
