Topic 1: Qualitative Research Design

Using the knowledge and insights gained from the textbook and other reliable sources answer the following. Define, in your own words, qualitative research. Locate and cite two different types of qualitative research articles related to your PICOT project. Provide a brief explanation of each design. Identify a potential qualitative research study that is important to nursing and describe which design you would use for this study, why you would use that design, and how the information generated from the study could be applied in nursing practice. Reflect on the value of qualitatitve research adding to the science, knowledge, and practice of nursing.

Introduction: In this assignment, two topics related to qualitative research design and evaluating qualitative research are provided for medical college students. The first topic requires the definition of qualitative research, locating and citing two types of qualitative research articles, identifying a potential qualitative research study, and reflecting on the value of qualitative research in nursing. The second topic requires the evaluation of a qualitative study using four general areas and responding to the post of two peers using six research techniques in qualitative research.

Topic 1: Qualitative Research Design
Qualitative research is a type of research method that aims to explore and understand social phenomena through subjective interpretations of researchers and individuals’ experiences. It is an exploratory and interpretive method that involves data collection through various techniques such as in-depth interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and open-ended surveys. Some of the common types of qualitative research designs include inductive, deductive, grounded theory, phenomenology, ethnography, and case study.

For my PICOT project, I located and cited two different types of qualitative research articles, which are related to ‘Patient satisfaction with nursing care in acute care settings.’ The first article is a phenomenology design, which explored the lived experiences of former intensive care unit patients and their perceptions of nursing care. The study concluded that the caring behavior and communication of nurses influenced the patients’ satisfaction with the nursing care. The second article is a case study design, which examined the patients’ perceptions of nursing care in a single hemodialysis unit. The study concluded that providing individualized, patient-centered care improved patients’ perceptions of nursing care in the hemodialysis unit.

A potential qualitative research study that is important to nursing is exploring the experiences of family caregivers caring for terminally ill patients. I would use the ethnography design for this study because it involves the observation of people in their natural settings for an extended period. The ethnography design allows an in-depth exploration of the caregivers’ experiences, perceptions, and daily routine caring for the terminally ill patients. The information generated from the study could be applied in nursing practice by understanding the caregivers’ needs and developing appropriate support programs that address their social, emotional, and physical needs.

Qualitative research adds value to the science, knowledge, and practice of nursing by providing an in-depth understanding of individuals’ experiences, beliefs, and perceptions in healthcare. It helps nurses develop patient-centered care that recognizes patients’ unique needs and preferences, which ultimately leads to better healthcare outcomes. Qualitative research also allows nurses to explore complex social and cultural issues that impact healthcare decision-making and provides insights into managing patients’ symptoms effectively.

Topic 2: Practice – Evaluating Qualitative Research
The article “Making the Critical Appraisal for Summaries of evidence-based medicine: critical appraisal of summaries of evidence” is a qualitative study that aimed to explore the critical appraisal of researchers’ summaries of evidence-based medicine. The study design was a case study that used document analysis and interviews with researchers to collect data.

Using the four general areas for evaluating a qualitative study, the article’s credibility was established through the authors’ clear description of the research methods used, the sample selection criteria, and how the data were analyzed. The transferability aspect of the study was demonstrated through the authors’ detailed description of the research context and sample selection criteria. The dependability of the study was established through the author’s clear description of the data collection and analysis process, which provided transparency and consistency in the study’s findings. Lastly, the confirmability aspect of the study was established through the author’s efforts to address the potential sources of bias and how the research findings were supported by the data.

In response to my peers’ posts, I would use the six research techniques used in qualitative research to provide feedback to their evaluation, which includes data collection, data analysis, reflexivity, validity, reliability, and generalization techniques. Keeping in mind the four general areas for evaluating a qualitative study, I would provide constructive feedback to help improve their evaluation.
