Introduction:

As a medical professor, it is my responsibility to design and conduct lectures, evaluate student performance, and provide feedback through examinations and assignments for medical college students. In this assignment, I will be discussing two different topics. The first topic is related to the American Nurses Association (ANA) and its position statements, and the second topic pertains to ethical principles that were highlighted in a video showing a nurse who refused to give patients’ blood to the police and was arrested.

Part 1: ANA Official Position Statements

The ANA is an organization that develops positions relevant to nursing practice, health policy, and social concerns impacting the health of patients and families. Their position statements guide the profession, amplify the views of nursing, and educate consumers and decision-makers. One ANA position statement that I found interesting is “The Nurse’s Role in Ethics and Human Rights: Protecting and Promoting Individual Worth, Dignity, and Human Rights in Practice Settings.”

This position statement emphasizes the importance of nurses protecting and promoting individual worth, dignity, and human rights in practice settings. Nurses are encouraged to advocate for their patients and families, and to be knowledgeable about ethical principles and moral values that guide nursing practice. This ANA position statement aligns with my personal beliefs as a medical professor and as a healthcare professional. I believe that nurses play a critical role in ensuring that patients receive appropriate care, and that their individual worth, dignity, and human rights are respected.

In summary, the ANA position statement on “The Nurse’s Role in Ethics and Human Rights” reinforces the importance of ethics and moral values in nursing practice. It highlights the responsibility of nurses to advocate for their patients and families, and to ensure that they receive care that is respectful of their individual worth, dignity, and human rights. As a medical professor, I share these sentiments and believe that it is crucial for nursing students to understand the importance of ethics and moral values in healthcare.

Part 2: Ethical Principles in the Nurse’s Video

The video of the nurse who refused to give patients’ blood to the police and was arrested highlights several ethical principles that prompted the nurse’s actions. The nurse, Alex Wubbels, was following hospital policy when she refused to provide the blood sample and explained the reasons why this was not lawful. The ethical principles that prompted Wubbels’ actions include autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice.

Autonomy refers to the right of patients to make their own decisions about their healthcare. Wubbels was following the autonomy principle by refusing to give the blood sample without the patient’s consent. Beneficence refers to the obligation of healthcare providers to act in their patients’ best interests. Wubbels was acting in the patient’s best interest by refusing to give the blood sample without a warrant. Non-maleficence refers to the principle of “do no harm,” and Wubbels was following this principle by ensuring that the patient’s rights were not violated. Justice refers to the obligation of healthcare providers to treat all patients fairly and equitably. Wubbels was advocating for justice by ensuring that the patient’s rights were protected.

In summary, the video of the nurse who refused to give patients’ blood to the police and was arrested highlights important ethical principles that guide nursing practice. Autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice are all integral components of nursing ethics. As a medical professor, I believe that it is crucial for nursing students to understand these ethical principles and to apply them in their practice as healthcare professionals.
