Introduction: Leadership is one of the crucial concepts in nursing practice. A good leader can influence and motivate his/her team to achieve their goals. In this assignment, we will discuss one or more leadership topics that could be applied to nursing practice, its functions in different nursing roles such as bedside nurse, public health nurse, and unit manager, among others. We will also discuss how to use leadership in our personal practice and evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to career advancement. Additionally, we will highlight the top three traits of a good nurse leader, supported by our practice experience and scholarly sources.
Answer:
The chosen leadership topic is Transformational Leadership. According to Burns (1978), transformational leadership is a process that inspires and motivates followers by engaging them in a commitment to a shared vision or goal, which is beyond their self-interest. Transformational leadership has four components: Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individualized Consideration (Bass, 1985).
Transformational Leadership in Nursing Practice: In nursing practice, transformational leadership improves staff satisfaction, patient outcomes, and organizational performance. Three nursing roles where transformational leadership is critical are bedside nurse, nurse manager, and chief nursing officer (CNO). At the bedside nurse, a transformational leader shares their vision for quality care, sets clear expectations, and provides resources and support to achieve that vision. A transformational nurse manager creates a positive work environment, encourages communication, and promotes professional growth and achievement. A CNO who exemplifies transformational leadership promotes high-quality patient outcomes, collaborates with nurses, and advocates for the profession.
Using Transformational Leadership in Personal Practice: In my personal practice, I use transformational leadership in several ways. For example, I share my vision for excellence in care, encourage staff to take on leadership roles, provide feedback that supports professional development, and create an environment that fosters innovation and collaboration.
Evaluation of Personal Growth: My personal strengths in transformational leadership include excellent communication skills, optimism, and commitment. However, I need to improve on delegation skills, adapting to change, and time-management. Opportunities for my career advancement include formal leadership training, mentoring relationships, and continuing education. Threats to my career advancement include organizational constraints such as budgetary constraints and time pressures.
Top Three Traits of a Good Nurse Leader: A good nurse leader has several traits, including empathy, trustworthiness, effective communication, and critical thinking skills. Based on my experience and scholarly sources, the top three traits of a good nurse leader are:
1. Integrity: A nurse leader with integrity inspires trust, performs ethically, and models behavior consistent with ethical standards.
2. Emotional Intelligence: An emotionally intelligent leader can manage their emotions effectively, understand the emotions of others, and respond appropriately.
3. Resilience: A resilient nurse leader has the ability to persevere through challenges, adapt to change, and engage in self-care practices that enhance well-being.
Conclusion: Transformational leadership has become an essential concept in nursing practice. A nurse leader who exemplifies transformational leadership qualities can motivate their team, foster collaboration, and drive excellence in patient outcomes. Additionally, personal growth and evaluation of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats can lead to better career advancement. Integrity, emotional intelligence, and resilience are the top three traits of a good nurse leader.
