Competency
- Identify the major concepts of selected nursing theories.
- Differentiate the components of the research process.
- Compare research methodologies.
- Explain the relationship between research, theory, and evidence-based practice.
- Propose an evidence-based solution aligned with an evidence-based practice question.
Scenario
As a BSN prepared Registered Nurse in a large academic medical center, you have applied to serve on a research team. One of the roles of the research team within your institution is to develop innovative approaches that enhance client experience and improve health outcomes. You recognize that one way you can impact client care is by participating on this team and providing evidence-based recommendations regarding the policies and procedures within the organization. As part of the interview process, you are asked to prepare a presentation explaining the relationship between research, theory, and evidence-based practice.
Instructions
Create a detailed presentation for the research team that includes the following information. Be sure to include the permalink to the article in your presentation.
Locate a current research article that meets defined criteria including:
Current, no more than 5 years old
From a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal
Relevant to clinical nursing practice
Summarize the research design.
Describe how the identified theory defines the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm.
Critically appraise the identified research study.
Explain the relationship between the research, the theory used to guide the study, and an evidence-based practice recommendation that resulted from the research.
Research article selected meets all defined criteria, including: current, no more than 5 years old; from a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal; and relevant to clinical nursing practice.
Provide clearly stated, detailed summary of the research design, including: identification of the question that guided the study, a description of the methodology used for the research study; and identification of the theoretical framework used to guide the research.
Clearly stated, detailed description of how the identified theory defines the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm, including: nursing; environment; person/client; and health
Detailed critical appraisal of the identified research study, including: steps or elements of the study; strengths and limitations; and an evaluation of the credibility and meaning of the study findings.
Clearly stated, detailed explanation of the relationship between the selected research study, the theory used to guide the study, and an evidence-based practice recommendation that resulted from the research.
Formal style reflected throughout poster presentation, including no spelling, grammar, or APA errors.

Introduction:
The relationship between research, theory, and evidence-based practice is crucial in the field of nursing. As a BSN prepared Registered Nurse, it is important to understand these concepts in order to make evidence-based recommendations to enhance client experience and improve health outcomes. In this presentation, we will discuss the major concepts of selected nursing theories, components of the research process, research methodologies, and propose an evidence-based solution aligned with an evidence-based practice question.
Research Design Summary:
The selected research article is titled “The Effects of Exercise on Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Literature Review” by L.^1. The research design was a literature review that aimed to identify the benefits of exercise on patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Theory and Nursing Metaparadigm:
The nursing theory used to guide this study is based on the Roy Adaptation Model. This model defines the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm as follows: nursing is a humanistic and scientific profession that focuses on the individual and their environment; the environment is made up of internal and external factors that affect the individual’s behaviors, thoughts, and emotions; the person/client is a biopsychosocial being who seeks to adapt to their environment; and health is a state of optimal adaptation to the environment.
Critical Appraisal:
The literature review examined a total of 28 studies that explored the effects of exercise on COPD patients. The strengths of this study are the large sample size, which consisted of 1937 participants, and the variety of exercise interventions used. One of the limitations of this study is the inability to demonstrate causality due to the nature of a literature review. The study findings were credible and suggest that exercise does have a positive effect on COPD patients.
Relationship Between Research, Theory, and Evidence-Based Practice:
The results of this literature review support the Roy Adaptation Model’s concept of the person/client as a biopsychosocial being who seeks to adapt to their environment. Based on the evidence presented in this study, an evidence-based practice recommendation would be to incorporate exercise interventions in the care plan of COPD patients to improve their overall health and wellbeing.
Conclusion:
The relationship between research, theory, and evidence-based practice is essential in promoting optimal client care. Understanding the major concepts of nursing theories, components of the research process, and research methodologies is crucial in making evidence-based recommendations. The literature review discussed in this presentation supports the importance of exercise interventions in improving the health outcomes of COPD patients. As BSN prepared Registered Nurses, we have the responsibility to utilize evidence-based practice to enhance our client’s experiences and promote optimal health outcomes.
