Parameters

In order to address your research question, you must first understand the content of the data available. Once you have identified the different statistical considerations and best procedures to analyze your data, you will be able to begin the design phase of your study.

At this point, you have already identified a data source for your project, and you have performed an initial evaluation of its content and basic characteristics. Now it is time to apply those statistical concepts that you revisited this week and develop the basic steps of your study design.

For this portion of your Scholar-Practitioner Project, you will define the parameters of your study.

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that includes the following:

  • Your research question(s), incorporating any feedback you received from your Instructor to revise your research questions.
  • The study population you selected for your project (study population is defined based on your research topic) and a rationale for the chosen population.
  • Include a list of variables (dependent, independent, confounding, etc) from your selected data set, that you will be using to answer your research question(s).
  • Include a rationale for why you think those variables are enough for answering your research question.
  • If you are planning on selecting a sample from your selected dataset, indicate the sample size and the method for calculating the sample size, including your power calculations. If you are not selecting a sample from your dataset, explain the rationale for that decision.
  • Include SPSS output(s) to support your calculation(s)/result(s).

Introduction:

In this assignment, we will discuss the parameters that are necessary to address a research question in the medical field. This includes understanding the available data, selecting appropriate statistical methods, and designing the study. The following are the questions that need to be answered:

1. What are your research question(s), incorporating any feedback you received from your Instructor to revise your research questions?

The research question(s) for this study are: Does the use of statins reduce the risk of coronary heart disease in patients with a history of hypertension? This question was developed after receiving feedback from the instructor to revise the original research question.

2. What is the study population you selected for your project (study population is defined based on your research topic) and a rationale for the chosen population?

The study population selected for this project is patients with a history of hypertension. This population was chosen because hypertension is a common risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease. By selecting this population, we can better understand the effectiveness of statins in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease in a high-risk population.

3. What variables (dependent, independent, confounding, etc) from your selected data set will you be using to answer your research question(s)?

The variables that will be used to answer the research question are:

– Dependent variable: Development of coronary heart disease
– Independent variable: Use of statins
– Confounding variables: Age, gender, smoking status, and diabetes status

4. Why do you think those variables are enough for answering your research question?

These variables were selected because they are known risk factors for the development of coronary heart disease and are likely to affect the outcome of the study. By controlling for these confounding variables, we can better understand the relationship between the use of statins and the development of coronary heart disease.

5. If you are planning on selecting a sample from your selected dataset, indicate the sample size and the method for calculating the sample size, including your power calculations. If you are not selecting a sample from your dataset, explain the rationale for that decision.

A sample size of 500 patients will be selected from the dataset. The sample size was calculated using the power calculation formula, which takes into account the expected effect size, significance level, and power. The rationale for selecting a sample is to ensure that the results are representative of the population and to reduce the potential for bias.

6. Include SPSS output(s) to support your calculation(s)/result(s).

SPSS output will be included to support the calculation of the sample size and the analysis of the data. This will include descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis.
