Assignment
: Nursing Theory Analysis Paper

Overview/Description:The purpose of this assignment is to describe, evaluate and
discuss application of a nursing grand or mid-range theory. This assignment
also provides the learner an opportunity to connect theory and research to
nursing phenomena. Learners will develop
an 8-10 page paper
(excluding the title page and references) using APA
style to address the elements listed below.

Theory/Author
Name and Background

Select
a Grand or Mid-Range Theory that is appropriate to your practice setting.

1.  Describe the theorist’s
background in detail and discuss how their experiences have impacted the theory
development.

2.  Examine crucial references
for the original and/or current work of the theorist and other authors writing
about the selected theory.

3.  Identify the phenomenonof
concernor problems addressed by the theory.

Theory
Description:
Explain
whether the theory uses deductive, inductive or retroductive reasoning. Provide
evidence to support your conclusion.

1.  Describe the major concepts
of the theory.   How are they defined? (theoretically and/or
operationally) Is the author consistentin the use of the concepts
and other terms in the theory?

2.  Interpret how the concepts
are defined.   Implicitly or explicitly?

3.  Examine the relationships
(propositions) among the major concepts.

Evaluation

1.  Identify explicit and
implicit assumptions (values/beliefs) underlying the theory. On what
assumptions does the theory build?

2.  Examine if the theory has a
description of the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm. If so, how are
they explained in the theory? If the metapardigm is not explained, what
elements do you see as relevant to the theory and why?

3.  Discuss the clarity of the
theory.  Did it have lucidness and consistency?

Application

1.  Examine how the theory would
guide nursing actions.

2.  Describe specificallyhow
you can use this theory in your area of nursing (Practice, Education,
Informatics or Administration).

Introduction:
The Nursing Theory Analysis Paper is designed to provide college students an opportunity to describe, evaluate, and discuss the application of a nursing grand or mid-range theory. The assignment includes selecting a grand or mid-range theory that is appropriate to the student’s practice setting, describing the theorist’s background in detail, and examining crucial references for the original and/or current work of the theorist and other authors writing about the selected theory. Additionally, the student will explain whether the theory uses deductive, inductive, or retroductive reasoning, describe the major concepts of the theory, examine the relationships (propositions) among the major concepts, and identify explicit and implicit assumptions (values/beliefs) underlying the theory. Finally, the student will examine how the theory would guide nursing actions, describe specifically how they can use this theory in their area of nursing (Practice, Education, Informatics, or Administration), and write in correct APA style and format.

Answer:

For this assignment, I have selected the grand theory of Health Promotion. The concept of health promotion is essential to nursing practice, and its application is found in a variety of settings, including acute and primary health care and community care. The Health Promotion theory provides a holistic approach to healthcare where the nurse assists patients to identify behaviors that contribute to positive health outcomes and avoid negative health outcomes.

The theorist behind the Health Promotion theory is Nola Pender. She is a professor emeritus at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. Her work on the Health Promotion theory has been influential in shaping nursing practice in several settings. Pender’s background in nursing, together with her research on preventive health behaviors in adolescents and adults, has had a significant impact on the development of the Health Promotion theory.

The Health Promotion theory is founded on the belief that individuals have the capacity to actively participate in promoting their health. The phenomenon of concern addressed by the theory is the promotion of positive health behaviors among individuals and communities. The Health Promotion theory uses deductive reasoning, where the theory is tested against existing knowledge about health behaviors and the promotion of health.

The major concepts of the Health Promotion theory include person, environment, nursing, and health. The person is viewed as an active partner in the promotion of their health, with a capacity for self-regulation and motivation. The environment refers to the surrounding factors that influence the behavior of the individual, including physical, psychological, and social factors. Nursing involves the provision of resources and support to facilitate positive health behaviors. Health refers to the state of well-being that is achieved through active participation in health promotion activities.

The relationships among the major concepts in the Health Promotion theory are described through propositions. Pender’s theory posits that increased participation in health promotion interventions leads to improved health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs. The theory assumes that individuals are motivated to engage in behaviors that promote their health and that they have access to the resources and support necessary to facilitate this process.

The Health Promotion theory is clear and consistent regarding its concept definitions. The theory’s assumptions are fundamentally based on the belief that individuals have the capacity to promote their health. The theory has a clear description of the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm, including person, environment, nursing, and health.

The Health Promotion theory would guide nursing actions by providing a framework for promoting health behaviors among individuals and communities. As a nurse, I can use this theory in my area of nursing practice by providing patients with resources and support to facilitate positive health behaviors. This theory is useful in education and administration settings for promoting healthy behaviors among healthcare professionals and patients.

In summary, the Health Promotion theory provides a framework for promoting positive health behaviors among individuals and communities. Nola Pender’s work on this theory has had a significant impact on nursing practice, and its application can be found in a variety of settings. The Health Promotion theory provides a useful framework for promoting healthy behaviors in nursing practice.
