Introduction:
As a professor of medicine, it is important to discuss the impact of popular culture on health and wellness. In the Unit 2 Discussion, students were asked to consider different theories of popular culture and assess which theory they found most plausible. In this answer, I will provide an example of a theory and supporting evidence from popular culture.
Answer:
The theory that I find most plausible is the Cultivation Theory. This theory suggests that television exposure shapes our views of reality and influences our beliefs about the world. In other words, individuals who watch a lot of TV tend to believe that what they see on TV is an accurate portrayal of real life, often resulting in a distorted view of reality.
One example of the Cultivation Theory in action is the portrayal of smoking in popular culture. Studies have shown that individuals who watch a lot of TV are more likely to smoke because they see smoking as a common, socially acceptable activity. Characters in popular TV shows and movies are often depicted smoking, which can also contribute to the normalization of tobacco use.
Furthermore, the Cultivation Theory can also be applied to the portrayal of body image in popular culture. Research has shown that exposure to thin, “ideal” body types in the media can lead to body dissatisfaction and disordered eating behaviors. For example, fashion models and actors in movies are often depicted with unrealistic body proportions, which can fuel negative body image perceptions among viewers.
Overall, the Cultivation Theory provides a valuable framework for understanding how popular culture can shape our beliefs and behaviors regarding health and wellness. By recognizing the potential influence of media on our thoughts and actions, individuals can make more informed decisions about their health choices.
