Week 3 -Assignment

Data Analysis: Group Differences

Review the instructions for your Final Paper in Week Five the course.  For
this week’s assignment, utilize the following Excel data, which contains B.M.I., F.B.S., gender, and clinic
information for a group of children ages 10-14, to complete items two and three
of your Final Paper.

  • Assess how B.M.I. varies by gender.  Use the tab
“B.M.I. of Boys and Girls”.  These are the same study subjects
described in the “All Variables” tab, but the data on gender and B.M.I. is
set up in a way that will facilitate running the statistical analysis to
assess whether there is a difference between the B.M.I. of boys and
girls.  What test will you use?  What does the test reveal?

  • Analyze F.B.S. by clinic.  There are three clinics
(A, B, C) and data is ready for your analysis in the “F.B.S. by Clinic”
tab.  What statistical analysis is most appropriate?  Why?
         What do the results indicate?
  • Your paper should be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the
  • Ashford Writing Center.  It must be a minimum of two pages and include
  • graphs, tables, and outputs that are clearly titled and explained.  This
  • assignment will be used as part of your Final Paper, it is expected that any
  • feedback provided by your instructor regarding this assignment will be incorporated
  • into your Final Paper submission.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that
will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Introduction:

As a medical professor responsible for designing and evaluating assignments for medical college students, the following are answers to questions related to a data analysis task for week three.

1. Assess how B.M.I. varies by gender. Use the tab “B.M.I. of Boys and Girls”. These are the same study subjects described in the “All Variables” tab, but the data on gender and B.M.I. is set up in a way that will facilitate running the statistical analysis to assess whether there is a difference between the B.M.I. of boys and girls. What test will you use? What does the test reveal?

To assess how BMI varies by gender, a two-sample t-test can be used to compare the means of the BMI values for boys and girls. The test will help determine whether there is a statistically significant difference in BMI values between the two groups. The results of the analysis will reveal whether there are significant differences in the BMI of boys and girls in the sample.

2. Analyze F.B.S. by clinic. There are three clinics (A, B, C) and data is ready for your analysis in the “F.B.S. by Clinic” tab. What statistical analysis is most appropriate? Why? What do the results indicate?

To analyze F.B.S. by clinic, a one-way ANOVA (analysis of variance) can be used to compare the means of F.B.S. values across the three clinics (A, B, C). One-way ANOVA is most appropriate because it compares the means of multiple groups and determines whether there are any significant differences between them. The results of the analysis will indicate whether there are any significant differences in the F.B.S. values across the three clinics.
