Reflect: Please take some time to reflect on how the concept of global citizenship has shaped your identity, and think about how being a global citizen has made you a better person in your community.

In today’s world of advanced technology, being a global citizen can be highly beneficial to one’s success in meeting personal, academic, and professional goals. As a global citizen, one is exposed to and can learn from diverse ideas, cultures, and practices. This exposure can improve critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, all of which are essential in medicine. Additionally, global citizens are often more adaptable, communicative, and empathetic, skills that are crucial in a medical setting.
Despite the importance of global citizenship, there has been disagreement among theorists about its definition. Reysen and Katzarska-Miller (2013) define global citizenship as the “combination of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors which leads a person to become responsible, committed, and active members of local and global communities.” This definition suggests that global citizenship involves understanding and acknowledging one’s responsibility to the world and taking action to make it a better place.
