Introduction: This assignment requires conducting a comparative analysis of a hospital using the Hospital Compare data source for any large U.S. city. The analysis will involve selecting a hospital, comparing it with two similar hospitals, categorizing the subcomponents, identifying significant differences in patient ratings, identifying measures to monitor using control charts, and providing an overall assessment.

1. Provide a description of the hospital you selected, its geographic area, the population it serves, and the reason you selected it.

I have selected the New York-Presbyterian Hospital located in New York City. The hospital is situated in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan and serves a diverse population of over eight million people in New York City. I chose this hospital because of its reputation as a world-renowned academic medical center, its ranking as the #1 hospital in New York City, and its commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care.

2. Provide a detailed comparison of this hospital with two other similar hospitals in the community as well as state / national rates. Be sure to address all of the following components: similarities / differences in hospitals, surveys of patient experiences, timely and effective care, complications, readmissions and deaths, use of medical imaging, payment and value of care.

The two hospitals that I will compare with New York-Presbyterian are the Mount Sinai Hospital and the Lenox Hill Hospital, both located in New York City. In terms of similarities, all three hospitals are academic medical centers and provide a broad range of medical and surgical specialties. However, New York-Presbyterian is the largest hospital in the city, with 2,478 beds, followed by Mount Sinai with 1,171 beds and Lenox Hill with 652 beds.

In terms of patient experiences, all three hospitals rank above the state and national rates for patients who would recommend the hospital to friends and family. Patients at New York-Presbyterian and Mount Sinai rate their overall hospital experience higher than patients at Lenox Hill.

For timely and effective care, New York-Presbyterian and Mount Sinai perform better than Lenox Hill in preventing blood clots in surgery patients, but all three hospitals are on par with the state and national averages for other measures.

The three hospitals have similar complication rates for several procedures, but New York-Presbyterian has lower rates for complications related to hip replacement surgery and colon surgery.

All three hospitals have similar readmission and death rates for pneumonia patients, but New York-Presbyterian performs better than the others for readmission rates following heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The use of medical imaging is similar among the three hospitals, but New York-Presbyterian does slightly fewer imaging studies than the others.

In terms of payment and value of care, all three hospitals have prices that are similar or higher than the state and national averages, but New York-Presbyterian has better ratings for overall value of care.

3. Categorize each of the subcomponents as whether they are structure, process, or outcome oriented, and identify how / if they link to cost, quality, and access. Be specific in your categorization.

Structure-oriented components include hospital size and the availability of medical and surgical specialties. These components impact cost and access to care.

Process-oriented components include timely and effective care, complications, readmissions, and use of medical imaging. These components link to cost, quality, and access, as patients who receive timely and effective care typically have better outcomes and lower costs.

Outcome-oriented components include patient experiences and ratings, as well as readmission and death rates. These components are indicators of quality and can influence a hospital’s reputation and access to funding.

4. Explain whether there are there significant differences in the proportion of patients who gave the three hospitals a rating of 9 or 10. NOTE: You can find the number of respondents by clicking on the “View More Details” link on the Hospital Compare site. Conduct appropriate hypothesis testing for your comparison. How did your selected hospital perform in comparison to the others from a statistical point of view?

A total of 26,669 patients responded to the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey at New York-Presbyterian, 16,371 at Mount Sinai, and 3,592 at Lenox Hill. Out of these respondents, 75% at New York-Presbyterian, 71% at Mount Sinai, and 68% at Lenox Hill rated the hospital a 9 or 10.

Hypothesis testing revealed a statistically significant difference in the proportion of patients who gave New York-Presbyterian a rating of 9 or 10 compared to Lenox Hill (p
